Rito Funebre alla Terra, 2020 (Funeral Rite to the Earth, 2020)
In different times and places, many cultures have developed ritual practices of purification and preparation of the deceased with methods that are surprisingly similar, often involving recurring elements such as water and hair.
Hair, as a sign of grief and sacrifice, was torn out and scattered to cover the body of the deceased.
This performative action is a tribute to Mother Earth and her people, who throughout the centuries have endured devastation, death, and suffering. The geographic maps of the continents—like the “Spoglie (Spoils)” of the deceased—are covered by tangles of hair that blanket the entire surface.
In her practice, the artist renders the forms and outlines of the maps barely distinguishable, just as the memories of those who are lost fade over time.
